Appli-Ks is a story as unique as our name. What began as a mother and daughter hobby in 2009 has since developed into a full time business in downtown Shreveport. Katy Rhodes and her mother
Kay Johnson started making a few items from home for friends and a few word of mouth customers. The orders started to build and so did the time each were devoting to doing their “hobby”. At some point in 2010 one of the ladies decided “We can do this as a business”. A name was created based on the first name initials of both Katy and Kay and using a clever “play on words” Appli-Ks was born.
(FYI-An “APPLIQUE” is a combination of fabric and embroidery to create a design)
As time allowed on the weekends the “K’s” began traveling to local festivals and started participating in the Shreveport Farmers Market. Appli-Ks became known in these small circles for their creativity, attention to detail, reasonable pricing, and quick turnaround. In the fall of 2013, Dillard's shoe department called wanting to have UGG boots monogrammed for the holidays. In 2013 Appli-Ks completed around 45-55 boots and in 2014 over 100. Appli-ks also monogrammed over 60 Columbia jackets for Dillard's for it's annual promotion in 2014. Appli-Ks continues to work with Dillard's on it's promotions.
In the summer of 2014 a unique opportunity presented itself with the “Shreveport Pop-Up Project”. The Pop-Up gave new businesses a storefront in un-leased property in Shreveport’s Red River District. If chosen, each business would open for a 3-6 week period to see how their business would do in a brick and mortar storefront for free. One winning business would be chosen at the end of the project to receive free rent for a year in un-leased space.
Appli-Ks was chosen to participate in the holiday pop-up. Many late nights, hard work, and a dedication to their craft were rewarded as Appli-Ks was chosen by “The Committee of One-Hundred” as the winning Pop-Up store for 2014. Appli-Ks opened it's doors officially in March 2015.
